Online retail sales of physical goods in China surpassed the 10 trillion yuan ($1.57 trillion) threshold to reach 10.8 trillion yuan in 2021, China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said Thursday.

In 2021, online retail sales in China reached 13.1 trillion yuan, MOFCOM spokesperson Gao Feng said at a press briefing.

Online retail sales of physical goods accounted for 24.5% of total consumer goods retail sales and contributed 23.6% of consumer goods retail sales growth in 2021, Mr. Gao.

He added that the ever-growing online retail market has become an important force in maintaining stable growth, employment and consumption.

China’s consumer market has seen a trend of upgrading last year, with healthy, green and high-quality products gaining popularity among consumers, Gao said. Data shows that sales of smart home devices jumped 90.5% year-on-year in 2021, and sales of organic vegetables soared 127.6% year-on-year.

E-commerce in the service sector recorded robust growth. Online catering sales rose 30.1 percent year-on-year, an increase of 27.9 percentage points from a year earlier, according to Gao.
