November was Australia’s biggest ever online sales month: AusPost
Australia Post has deemed November 2021 the “biggest month in Australian online shopping history” after delivering a record 21 million parcels over an admittedly prolonged sales period.
According to AusPost, online shopping throughout November broke last year’s record by 13% and jumped 76% from 2019 figures.
The trigger was the earlier start to Cyber Week 2021, said Australia Post’s general manager of parcels and express services, Ben Franzi.
“A lot of cybersales [started] earlier than last year [and] people were able to shop online for longer than the traditional four days of Black Friday,” Franzi said.
Throughout the weekend between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Australia Post said it delivered 800,000 parcels, with 444 tonnes of parcels carried by air freight, 15% more than the previous year .
According to AusPost, nearly a quarter of sales were made up of fashion purchases.
Franzi added, however, that the logistical issues that have plagued Australia’s retail supply chain and delivery network throughout the pandemic are yet to be resolved, and said Australia Post is still working in a “difficult environment”.
“Our delivery teams [managed] to deliver nearly a million parcels a day to the New South Wales gateways alone on December 1 and 2, and we have our delivery people and handlers across the country working around the clock as we head into a busy Christmas,” Franzi said.
