Bawumia launches ‘ECG Power’ app for online credit purchase

Ghana Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Tuesday February 18, 2020 launched a mobile app called ECG Power which allows customers to purchase electricity at their convenience from the Ghana Electricity Company.

It was designed by the IT staff of the ECG.

The app enables 2.8 million of the company’s 3.8 million customers to make payments for purchased electricity and services rendered by the company through their mobile phones.

The old meters must be replaced with new ones compatible with the application, which will increase the number of users.

Smartphone users can download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store, create an account, add the meter number, and top up or pay bills from their mobile money wallets.

Customers using phones that are not smart can dial * 226 # and follow the instructions to enjoy the same service.

Launching the app in Accra, Dr Bawumia said this “innovative app” “will improve the delivery of an essential public service to all ECG customers – households, organizations, small businesses and industry” .

“This is historic in the sense that the ECG, for the first time in its long history, uses technology to tackle two major problems: first, to improve one of its essential functions of supplying electricity to his clients ; and, second, address the more serious challenge of effectively and efficiently mobilizing revenues from the supply of electricity.

“With this new app, customers can now purchase electricity credit from the comfort of their own homes, anytime, anywhere. In addition, you can now buy credit for your family members in difficulty and for your acquaintances.

“All of this is well in line with President Akufo-Addo’s vision of using digital technology to transform Ghana’s economy,” said Dr Bawumia, adding: “The government’s agenda, which we consistently deliver to Ghanaians, is to use technology. to bring about a total transformation in the way we do our daily tasks, the way we do our business and the way we govern ourselves.

While commending ECG’s board, management and staff for effectively using the pilot period to iron out the app’s issues, he urged them to take steps to provide the support systems needed to efficient management of the mobile application.

“There can be no excuse for systems failures, unreliability and inaccuracies,” he warned.

Dr Bawumia said: “As a government, we believe in local solutions to solve local problems and I would like to express my congratulations to the ECG team who developed this app. Like Oliver Twist, we look forward to more innovative and productivity-enhancing measures to improve efficiency and, in so doing, lower the cost of electricity for Ghanaians.
